3D/4D Baby Scan (with HD Live Option)
See your baby in stunning detail with our 3D/4D scan experience. We capture still images of your baby in three dimensions (3D), and the fourth dimension, time, lets us show moving images (4D), like a mini movie of your little one before they even arrive.
We also offer HD Live (often called 5D), for even more lifelike images, and from 26 weeks onwards, you can add 8K enhanced images for the ultimate keepsake.
From around 26 weeks, baby starts to fill out a little, which usually means better definition in those squishy cheeks but as they grow and space becomes limited, images can get trickier. That’s why we recommend booking between 26 and 32 weeks for the best results.
Every scan is unique and baby-led. If your little one decides to snuggle into the placenta or turn away (it happens), we’ll still do our absolute best to capture hands, feet, or whatever is on show! If we’re unable to get any clear images, we’ll offer a complimentary short rescan on another day at the sonographer’s discretion.
Includes at least 2 printed photos + all digital images and video sent directly to your phone before you leave, no hanging around.
Who it's for
This scan is ideal if you're between 24 and 32 weeks pregnant. Earlier in this window (around 24 weeks), baby still has a bit more room to move, which can sometimes mean better angles but they haven’t quite filled out those soft, squishy features just yet. Later on (closer to 30–32 weeks), baby starts to look more like they will at birth, with chubbier cheeks and more defined features, though space is tighter, so views may be more limited.
We’re also happy to scan after 32 weeks if you’d like us to try, just keep in mind that getting crystal-clear images becomes more difficult as baby gets bigger and comfier in there.
What happens
Before your scan begins, your sonographer will ask a few questions about your general health, medical history (especially anything gynaecological or pregnancy-related), and anything specific you’d like us to know this time around. It’s all to make sure we tailor the session to you.
The scan itself is transabdominal (over your tummy). You’ll be asked to uncover your bump, and you might need to shimmy your waistband down just a little. Some ultrasound gel will be applied to your lower abdomen (we may go higher depending on baby’s position), and then the probe is gently moved across your belly. It’s usually painless, just a little cool and slippy.
We always begin by locating and showing you baby’s heartbeat using our regular 2D black and white mode, just like any standard scan. Once everything’s looking good and baby’s in a cooperative mood, we’ll switch over to the 3/4D mode and start capturing those magic moments.
For the best results, baby needs to be surrounded by clear fluid with minimal obstructions (arms, legs, or placenta can sometimes get in the way). Your sonographer might ask you to change positions, take a gentle bounce on our birthing ball, head to the loo, or pop outside for a short walk, whatever gives us the best chance of seeing that little face clearly.
If baby stays camera shy and we can’t get any good views of their face, don’t worry, we may offer you a free rescan, which we’ll book before you leave.
Once your scan is complete, we’ll go through everything together, answer any questions, and provide your printed images and digital images/videos direct to your phone, no waiting around.
Preparation
The best way to get lovely, clear images (AKA the ones you’ll want to show everyone) is to start hydrating a few days before your scan. We recommend drinking up to 3 litres of water a day for at least 3–4 days beforehand, as it helps all your tissues hydrate nicely, which can make a big difference to scan quality.
On the day, eat and drink as normal, but don’t go wild with the water, no need to arrive bursting. We suggest you empty your bladder before you leave home, then sip up to 500ml on your way to us.
Want to help baby be a little more active for their close-up? Bring along a cold, fizzy or sugary drink, and maybe a snack too, we might ask you to use them if baby’s being shy.
Guests are welcome, partners, family, trusted friends and even little ones. If you’re bringing young children, we recommend buggies and distractions at the ready. Our clinic’s a calm space (not toddler-proof!), so snacks and screens are your friend.
On the day
Try not to empty your bladder for about an hour before your scan. You don’t need to chug litres of water or be uncomfortably full; just being gently full is perfect. What really helps? Being well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment can make a noticeable difference to your scan images.
If your appointment is between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, head into Main Reception at Greetwell Place and the lovely team there will let us know you’ve arrived.
If you're visiting outside these hours, when the main reception is closed, follow the road through the car park to the right of the building, past the 5mph sign, and park near the ScanLinc sandwich board sign; that’s our private entrance.
Please note: there’s no access to the building before your appointment time.
We kindly ask that you wait in your car or at a discreet distance until we invite you in. This is to protect the privacy of the person before you, not everyone is sharing their pregnancy publicly, and not every scan brings happy news. Thanks for helping us keep this space respectful for everyone.
