Understand your ovarian reserve, without the guesswork.

The AMH test is a simple blood test that measures the levels of anti-Müllerian hormone in your body - a hormone produced by the small follicles in your ovaries. It’s most commonly used to assess your ovarian reserve, or in plain terms, give an idea of how many eggs you may have left.

Now, let’s be clear: this test can’t tell you the exact number of eggs or whether they’re high quality (no test can). But it does offer a helpful snapshot of your reproductive picture - especially if you’re thinking about fertility now or in the future.

What to know:
• AMH levels reflect egg quantity, not quality
• Results are stable across your cycle — you can test at any time
• Not a standalone fertility test — it works best alongside other hormone or ovulation checks
• Hormonal contraception (like the pill) may lower AMH readings, so do let us know if you’re using it

This test won’t give you all the answers, but it’s a strong starting point if you’re planning ahead, feeling unsure, or just want to understand your body a little better.

Who it's for

This test is ideal if you:
• Are considering IVF or other fertility treatments
• Are over 30 and trying to conceive
• Have a family history of early menopause and want to plan ahead
• Are thinking about freezing your eggs
• Are navigating menopause or fertility-related symptoms and want clarity

Just a heads-up: if you’re on the contraceptive pill, your AMH levels may read lower than they actually are - let’s chat through that when you book.

What happens

We’ll start by getting to know you a little - asking about your current situation, any relevant medical history, and what’s brought you in. This helps us make sure you’re receiving the most appropriate and supportive care for your needs.

A qualified clinician will then take your blood sample, usually from your arm (though occasionally we may use a vein in your hand). We’ll talk you through it, take our time, and do everything we can to keep it quick, gentle, and as comfortable as possible.

Preparation

For the best venepuncture experience making sure you have eaten beforehand and are really well hydrated (banging on about it but it really helps!) is really important. Also keeping wrapped up warm is great too.
Partners/family/trusted friends welcome.

When results are ready

If your appointment is before midday Monday to Friday, your results will usually be ready within 24 hours.
For tests taken after midday during the week, results are typically available within 36 to 48 hours.
Weekend appointments? You can expect your results by the following Tuesday.

On the day

To make your blood draw as smooth as possible, come well-hydrated and don’t skip breakfast - it really does make a difference. Staying warm helps too, so wrap up before you arrive.

If your appointment is between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, head into Main Reception at Greetwell Place. The reception team will let us know you’ve arrived.

If you’re booked outside of those hours, when reception is closed, follow the road to the right of the building, past the 5mph sign. Park near the ScanLinc sandwich board sign - that’s our private entrance. Please note there’s no access to the building before your appointment if reception is closed.

We kindly ask that you wait in your car or nearby at a respectful distance until we come to meet you. Some visitors prefer to keep their appointments private, and we like to honour that.
