Your thyroid runs the show when it comes to your energy, mood, and metabolism, and TSH is the hormone that keeps it all in check. Produced by your pituitary gland, TSH tells your thyroid how much of those all-important hormones (T3 and T4) to make.

This simple blood test gives us big clues about how well your thyroid is functioning.

Why someone might have a TSH test:

• To check for thyroid conditions like underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism) thyroid
• To monitor how well your thyroid medication is working
• To investigate symptoms like:
 – Feeling constantly tired or wired
 – Unexpected weight changes
 – Mood swings, anxiety, or low mood
 – Hair thinning, dry skin, or feeling cold all the time
• To screen for thyroid issues even if you’re not feeling symptoms, especially if you're at risk

Who it's for

• Feeling off and not sure why?
If you’re tired all the time, gaining or losing weight without trying, feeling anxious or low, or just not feeling like you, it could be your thyroid. A TSH test helps us figure it out.

• Trying for a baby or navigating hormonal ups and downs?
Thyroid hormones play a big role in fertility and menstrual health. Irregular periods, missed ovulation, or a higher risk of miscarriage can sometimes trace back to thyroid dysfunction.

• Pregnant - or planning to be?
Your thyroid needs to be in top form during pregnancy to support your baby’s brain development and lower the risk of complications. Some women are routinely checked if they’re considered higher risk.

• You’ve got a family or personal history of thyroid conditions
Especially if you also have autoimmune conditions like type 1 diabetes or coeliac disease - you're more likely to benefit from regular checks.

• You’re already on thyroid medication
This one’s a no-brainer - regular monitoring helps make sure your levels stay right where they should be.

What happens

We’ll start by taking a few details about you, including any relevant medical history. You’ll have the chance to talk through your current situation and any concerns, so we can make sure this is the right test for you.

A qualified clinician will then take a blood sample, usually from your arm, though occasionally from your hand. We aim to make the process as quick, comfortable, and stress-free as possible.

Preparation

To make your blood draw as smooth and comfortable as possible, make sure you’ve eaten beforehand and are well hydrated. Staying warm also helps, so wrap up before you arrive.
Partners, family members, or a trusted friend are always welcome to accompany you.

When results are ready

If your appointment is before midday Monday to Friday, your results will usually be ready within 24 hours.
For tests taken after midday during the week, results are typically available within 36 to 48 hours.
Weekend appointments? You can expect your results by the following Tuesday.

On the day

To make your blood draw as smooth as possible, come well-hydrated and don’t skip breakfast - it really does make a difference. Staying warm helps too, so wrap up before you arrive.

If your appointment is between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, head into Main Reception at Greetwell Place. The reception team will let us know you’ve arrived.

If you’re booked outside of those hours, when reception is closed, follow the road to the right of the building, past the 5mph sign. Park near the ScanLinc sandwich board sign - that’s our private entrance. Please note there’s no access to the building before your appointment if reception is closed.

We kindly ask that you wait in your car or nearby at a respectful distance until we come to meet you. Some visitors prefer to keep their appointments private, and we like to honour that.
