The early stages of pregnancy can be emotional, exciting, and let’s be honest, a little anxiety-inducing. Whether you’re counting down the days to your NHS scan or just want peace of mind that everything is progressing as it should, this scan offers you that clarity.
It’s also a good option if you’ve experienced light bleeding, cramping, a sudden loss of symptoms, or anything else that’s making you feel unsure. While these signs are often harmless, sometimes they do need checking. We’re here to give you answers, not just “wait and see.”
An early ultrasound can confirm your pregnancy, check for a heartbeat, confirm if it’s single or multiple, and even help date the pregnancy more accurately.
All reassurance scans include at least two printed images and digital images + video sent to your phone before you leave. No waiting. No guessing. Just reassurance, fast.
Who it's for
You’re between 6 and 14 weeks pregnant, or you haven’t had your NHS dating scan yet (AKA the 12 week scan).
• Count 6 weeks from the first day of your last period
• If your cycle’s irregular or you’re not sure of your dates, aim for at least 2 weeks from your first positive test
• Still feeling unsure? Drop us a message, we’re happy to help
Quick tip: If an internal (transvaginal) scan isn’t something you’d be comfortable with, it’s best to book from 8 weeks onwards to give us the best shot at getting clear images through your tummy.
What happens
We’ll start by having a relaxed chat. Your sonographer will ask a few questions about your general health, any previous pregnancies, gynaecological history, and how things have been feeling lately. The more we know, the better we can support you.
We’ll begin the scan using the transabdominal approach (that’s the one over your tummy). But in early pregnancy, it’s completely normal if we can’t get a clear enough view this way. If that happens, we’ll offer an internal (transvaginal) scan for a clearer look.
If an internal scan is needed:
– You’ll be asked to empty your bladder
– If you’ve come on your own, we’ll offer a chaperone
– You’ll have privacy to undress, and we’ll always keep things discreet and respectful
The internal scan is generally pain-free, just a little cold and stretchy.
Throughout the scan, you’ll be able to see what we’re seeing, and we’ll talk you through it. If we go quiet for a moment, it just means we’re concentrating—not that something’s wrong.
We’ll check:
• That the pregnancy is in the right place
• That we can see a heartbeat
• Whether it’s a single or multiple pregnancy
• That everything looks normal in and around the uterus
Once the scan is finished, you’ll have time to get dressed and gather your thoughts. Your sonographer will sit down with you to go through what we saw, answer any questions, and let you know if any next steps are needed.
Before you leave, we’ll hand over your printed scan photos and ping the digital images and video straight to your phone, no waiting around.
Preparation
Want clearer images and the best chance of a smooth, successful scan? Start with hydration and we mean before the day of your appointment. Aim to drink up to 3 litres of water a day for 3–4 days leading up to your scan. It helps hydrate the tissues, which can massively improve image quality (aka better pics for you to take home!).
On the day eat and drink normally, but don’t go wild with the water. Empty your bladder before you leave home, then sip up to 500ml in the lead-up to your appointment, just enough, not bursting.
If you’re very early in pregnancy (under 8 weeks), there’s a good chance we’ll need to do an internal scan to get a clear view. All of our sonographers are female and highly experienced. And no, we don’t care if you’ve shaved. We’re here for your wellbeing, not your grooming habits.
Not sure who to bring? You’re absolutely welcome to bring a partner, trusted friend or family member. Just bear in mind this can be an emotional appointment, and internal scans are, by nature, more intimate. We can screen your lower body from view during the scan, but choose someone you’re comfortable with.
And while we love little ones, early pregnancy scans aren’t always the right place for them, for your own emotional space and out of respect for others who may be having a difficult scan. We won’t turn anyone away, but we do gently suggest leaving children at home if you can.
On the day
Appointments between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday?
Head into the Main Reception at Greetwell Place. The lovely reception team will let us know you’ve arrived and we’ll come and collect you.
Appointments outside of these hours?
When Main Reception is closed, follow the road through the car park to the right of the building, past the 5mph sign. Look out for the ScanLinc sandwich board - that’s our private entrance. Park nearby and wait there, we’ll be with you soon.
Please note: there’s no access to the building before your appointment time.
A gentle request:
We ask that you stay in your vehicle or wait at a respectful distance until your appointment. Not everyone is ready to share their pregnancy news, and not every scan brings happy news. Your privacy, and theirs, matters.
